Hookgate Cottage

Project:
Hookgate Cottage

Client:
Private Residential

Location:
Bruton, Somerset

Description:
The site of Hookgate Cottage, a former workers cottage, faces east towards Alfred’s Tower and Stourhead Estate. Our concept began with the desire to exploit the view at first floor level, where open plan living would connect the whole family. The form of the house is on a dual axis and creates two external spaces – a morning courtyard and an evening courtyard, both of which can be accessed from the kitchen ‘hub’.  The house is arranged on a sloping site with a strong emphasis of hierarchical spaces and views, and achieves incredibly low u-values in-line with Passiv-Haus standards, utilising mechanical heat recovery ventilation and biomass heating.

We were privileged to win the 2013 Build It Awards ‘Best Self Build Architect’ category for Hookgate Cottage. [See Milton Lane, our 2014 winner for the same award]
