Milton Lane

Client:
Private Residential

Location:
Wells, Somerset

Description:
Hidden amongst mature Corsican Pines on a steeply sloping former wooded garden, Milton Lane is a 300m four bedroom modernist house commanding unprecedented views over the city of Wells and the surrounding Mendip Hills in Somerset.
With a western red cedar and white acrylic render exterior, this new home is organised over four floors as intersecting boxes, all purposefully orientated to thread between the existing trees while maximising the solar gain from the southern daylight.
The construction is a hybrid of masonry substructure, steel superstructure and timber frame external walls, each element chosen for its structural and economic efficiency.
The floors, walls and roofs achieve an impressive thermal value, which far exceeds current building regulation and reflects Passiv Haus standards and the building’s fabric is totally breathable, using wood fibre insulation and naturally sourced products.
The house was primarily designed with the plot’s sloping topography and client budget in mind, and the result is a beautifully serene and sustainable home.

We were privileged to win the 2014 Build It Awards ‘Best Self Build Architect’ category for Milton Lane. [See Hookgate Cottage, our 2013 winner for the same award]
